The Tears Behind the Camera: What I Learned This Senior Photo Season
Dear Future Senior Mom,
We just wrapped up another senior portrait season here at the beach, and I wanted to share something special with you as you plan to book your child’s session next year.
What stands out most to me isn’t the perfect lighting we captured or the stunning local locations we used—it’s the mothers who stood behind me as I photographed their seniors. The emotions I witnessed this season were a powerful reminder of why I do what I do.
Time and again, I’d look up from my viewfinder to see moms trying to discreetly wipe away tears. Some would laugh it off, saying, “I don’t know what’s wrong with me!” Others would simply stand silent, watching their child with a mixture of pride and disbelief.
One mother confessed to me, “I wasn’t prepared for how grown-up she would look through your lens.” Another told me she brought her son’s kindergarten photo in her purse “just to remind myself how far we’ve come.”
During outfit changes, I heard mothers reminiscing about shopping for first-day-of-school clothes, Halloween costumes, and sports uniforms. Now suddenly they were helping select the outfit that would memorialize the end of childhood.
What I want future clients to know is this: your emotions are welcome in my session. When you book your senior’s session with us next year, come prepared not just with outfits and props, but with permission to feel everything.
I’ve learned to keep tissues on hand and to build in small breaks when needed. I’ve discovered that some of the most authentic smiles happen when seniors respond to their emotional parents—that eye roll and grin when mom gets teary is pure gold through my lens.
Many mothers apologized for their emotions during our sessions this year. Not one needed to. These tears are as much a part of senior year as the cap and gown will be. They’re the physical manifestation of eighteen years of love, worry, pride, and hope compressed into a single afternoon.
So as you look ahead to booking your child’s senior portraits with us, know that you’re not just investing in photographs. You’re creating space to honor this monumental transition—for both of you.
And when you arrive for your session next year, I’ll be ready with my camera, my skill, and yes, plenty of tissue in my fanny pack. Because the photographs we create together aren’t just about how your child looks—they’re about marking this moment when your heart simultaneously breaks and swells with pride.
That’s the real magic we capture.
